Inquisition - Black Mass For A Mass Grave, 2020 CD Album Agonia Records - ARCD205 Among the mainstream black metal stars, Inquisition are my favorite by a large margin. But first things first: that 1990 excellent EP is not black metal, it is plain heavy & thrash metal, it sounds like a hidden Kreator demo trying to slow down and be more accessible in 1986. The 1993 demo is an amazing evolution on that front: full thrash-Kreator mode with a more technical approach, complex riffs and elaborated song structures. Killer! Especially if you are a fat refugee thrashosaurus from the 80s. It is only on the first album from 1998 that Inquisition switched to the full black metal attack. From this release on, it has been a non-stop avalanche of Bathory emulation and morbid blackness. Fans of the second and third Bathory albums are living their wet dream here. Of course Inquisition are much more than a Bathory clone, the riffing style is truly mesmerizing and more advanced than Quorthon's, but you get the idea. If you dig straightforward yet hypnotic black metal where you can almost touch the darkness and taste the decay, this discography is extremely comforting. It provides this feeling of returning home. It balances the brilliant, fast, heavy with the sinister beautiful, haunting, mature and grandiose without the bs atmospheric diabetes and orchestral cancer. Inquisition tops the popular black metal sector of the Zeriverse as the super dense triplazering black star! Remove brackets and unzip: [forever rezer] !ZER Inquisition ZER! |
