Deathspell Omega - The Long Defeat, 2022 CD Album Norma Evangelium Diaboli - NED056 Eat fish and black metal! The output from the infamous Deathspell Omega can be separated in two distinct sections, as if two bands were sporting the same name before and after 2004. The early stuff until 2003 is generic 90s raw black metal photocopied from Darkthrone and Mayhem's Deathcrush. The excitement level at the Church does not take off significantly when playing that segment of the DO discography, although as unoriginal as they are these raw and vicious releases are competent in their standard satanic mid-tempo roughness and even distill sometimes a glimpse of the personality DO developed after that adolescent phase. Then there is the earthquake of Si Monvmentvm Reqvires, Circvmspice, which is the start of a whole new black hole. From this point on, DO only made over the top masterpieces in multidimensional blackness and neurotic metal of monumental proportions. There is a high degree of sophistication in this madness, that echoes a lot of the Eastern European sound, especially that evil sound from Poland. Did DO inspire Poland, or vice-versa, or did bot both enter a symbiotic retroaction loop? Who cares? Fans of DO must worship Furia, Mord A Stigmata, Kriegsmaschine, Morrow and all the other heroes of the Church like Imperial Triumphant, and vice-versa. Complex and dissonant blackness that uses a seed of Voïvod to propel infinite headbanging evil in all directions is one thing, but such mastery in song writing and execution does put DO at the forefront of the avant-garde. It is really difficult to select a favorite in the post-2004 DO literal apocalypse, aka revelation of the ultimate. Drought is quite exceptional, but Paracletus is too - manic speed is not forgotten in the maze of hypnotic riffs. The last two releases might be superior even with less of that blast-bombing and more of the drug-addiction riffing where all instruments conspire to lose the innocent meat in its own aural conduits. It all depends on the wanted effect. Mind and body feed on DO, body and mind become slaves to DO. We are far beyond black metal here. In France one is supposed to take Gojira as the cream of the metal scene, but this is only media hype and low level gossip. The true force of metal advancement and the crown of domination from that country is Deathspell Omega. Submit and bang that skull! Break your brain and your skeleton against the triplazering black star of the insaniverse! Remove brackets and unzip: [fatanic acids] !ZER Deathspell Omega ZER! |

ReplyDeleteSorry - fixed.
DeleteMy favorite thing about the Church is not the free music, not even when it's great new bands I'd never heard before (Totenmond, Jurassic Jade, Eisenvater, etc etc etc.) No, it's your writing about music. How can we not want to listen to these bands you so eloquently praise!
ReplyDeleteAnd at very loud volume.
Thank You so much and keep it up please...
