Life Of Agony - A Place Where There's No More Pain, 2017 CD Album Napalm Records - NPR 659 JC 1993! Honeymoon in NYC. We are pissed because the week before our arrival and the week after our departure feature several amazing shows. On the noise-meter, our week is just dull. We end-up agonizing in a three hours lineup at CBGB to enter a super-packed Rollins gig. And it was so hot we did not even stay until the end. Catching a flyer for the album release party of a band called Life Of Agony, we decide to try that. And we are floored! Amazing show in a recycled church! The next morning, straight to the nearest record shop to get the CD. Masterpiece of super-addictive metallic & melodic crossover of the Leeway | Cro-Mags family, only enlarged! I was so hooked that the year after I got this digi with bonus live tracks. Few alums float higher in the zeriverse than River Runs Red. The following albums are less exciting. Ugly is very good, Broken Valley is totally great, even if both albums are not as heavy and dark as River. Although it features the drummer from the Crumbsuckers, Soul is disappointingly alt-rock, almost pop like a Stone Temple Pilot thing, only lighter (yes it is possible). The live unplugged is useless (I only like unplugged stuff when it is Terveet Kädet). The other live CDs are great. And... the new album is underwhelming. I expected more mass, more solid matter, more visceral hooks. Too much happiness? In my ranking, Broken Valley is superior. But let that not distract us from the triplazer running red! Would you remember if that church you saw them at was the Limelight near Union Square?
ReplyDeleteI saw them in Orlando, FL, the following year with Monster Voodoo Machine and CARCASS!! as the opening acts.
Do you think it's because the singer has transgendered into a woman that the music has changed? I know that Keith Now Mina originally left the band because he (at the time) wasn't feeling the music anymore? She says she's all happy now. Is it like when a band who works best loaded gets sober and becomes Aerosmith post-1986?
Limelight does ring a bell, I guess you nailed it.
DeleteIn LoA's case instead of "loaded" I'd use "depressed" or a synonym. Too much happiness makes them sound like Soundgarden, and it worked very well on Broken Valley... not as well on the new album.
It was never the same musically after River Runs Red. I knew it was over as soon as I saw the booklet for - and then heard - Ugly.
ReplyDeleteBands evolve, and that's great, but in this case it seemed that everything that had made the debut so great was gone.
True, River was a new musical height. It had almost the impact of Type O`s Slow, Deep & Hard, and that is big!
Delete"Recycled Church"...damn that's an interesting set of words.

I know that Keith Now Mina originally left the band because he.

RRR is the greatest "concept" album ever put on wax. Frightening.
