Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal, 2006 CD Album Metal Blade Records - MBCY-1059 War, death and crushed skulls! The sound, the legend of Bolt Thrower shall stay with us until the end of the zeriverse. This catalog of death is one of the largest pillars of heaviosity among the precursor of the genre. Uncomplicated structures and plain songs yet performed with the perfection of desire to split your spine and to melt the internal organs into grey and brown juices: you do not always have to go the tortuous way to catch your prey. Even speed is not mandatory, raw attacks of bulldozing ultra high density riffs through barbarian rhythms do the job awesomely - although the super classic first album and to some degree the second one contains plenty of grinding blasts, in the 90s Bolt Thrower soon specialized in mid tempo war machines. A tank is not a Ferrari, for war's sake. Every album here is great or awesome, and I shall be eternally hooked on the ultra classic first album, my favorite by a long stretch. Brutal, catchy riffs at the speed of Prophecy Of Doom, zer yeah! I still remember opening that mail order package in the summer of 1988, which also contained Excel's Split Image, then hesitating a very long time (at least 34 seconds) about which LP to play first. In Battle won, because I had never heard that band - before the internets, from my countryside without a metal scene, I used to order records solely on the basis of album reviews in photocopied zines with funny names and tortured logos. The zines said BT were destroying everything and I wanted to believe it and I was right, as BT did destroy everything within my neuron! In battle there is no law! WHAT A MONSTER!!! I will boldly claim it is one of the 5 best death metal albums of that era, an eternal classic carpet bombing of worldwide proportion. I credit it for spawning the war metal sound before Incantation. Before Dismember, before Entombed, before Atrocity, before many of the big guns, Bolt Thrower ravaged my ear drums and they still do and I have never stopped drooling. The Peel Sessions disc is another piece of anthology a true fan should not miss. Submit to Bolt Thrower! To the death!!!! Remove brackets and unzip: [deathonizer] !ZER Bolt Thrower ZER! |
