I (too) often mention that holy day of 1983 when I bought at once from the same store the records by these new amazing bands : Metallica, Raven, Exciter, Anvil, Battleaxe, Satan, Tokyo Blade. Because I had a few francs left that I feverishly needed to convert into more noise (had to make the trip to the city worthwhile), I then picked up almost at random this strange looking LP called The Law Of Devil's Land. Let's try Japanese! And from then on I was hooked forever. Despite being not as rough as the other records in this lot, Loudness offered something subtly different thanks to the amazing singer and something infinitely, viciously catchy with superb quality - that guitar god of Ritchie Blackmore influence! I was in this phase of heavy Discharge and Venom consumption, I should have hated good singers and refined songs. But Loudness are so great they overcome young wild male hormones. Loudness were and are awesome. Their massive discography can be divided in four segments: - The classic yet advanced hard rock and speed metal years up to and including Hurricane Eyes: only great to amazing albums, especially the mesmerizing classics The Law and Disillusion. - The shot at US radio success from Jealousy to On The Prowl: not bad, but not as great as before. The then new American singer on Soldier and On The Prowl was good yet made the band more conventional and less intense. - The sudden turn to a much heavier and darker sound from Loudness to Engine, featuring the fantastic singer from Flatbackers and EZO: these albums are all exceptional pieces of enlarged and crunchy almost-thrash metal: a series of perfect diamonds that fans of the awesome Yasha must consume without restraint. - In 2001 the band reunited with the original singer Minoru Niihara and have since released more albums of world class quality with various influences around the permanent classic heavy metal vibe with the occasional burst of speed. At least with the first two albums. Born To Expire is one of those eternal classics, another high star in the EZTT Crossover District: the intensity of Agnostic Front's Cause For Alarm & Cro-Mags' Best Wishes, with the same density of catchy hooks and addictive riffing, and led by a first class vocalist that actually sings. Measures is a little less intense on the thrash front and a little more metal and just as exciting. The last two albums diverge to the realms of Quicksand and Shelter in the typical 90s ways of heavy hard rock-meets-semi grunge, or whatever you need to tag it. Despite the total deviation from full speed ahead crossover, I love these two for the high class material they deliver. Leeway thrashing rocking rezer forever! Paint It Black is surely one of the greatest beasts I heard in recent times in the classic hardcore division. The first two albums are short fuses of Sick Of It All-based headbangers. Great delivery, with the catchy side lurking under all the roughness. But the masterpiece here is New Lexicon. That one showcases the full ripeness of their craft and develops a large Swiz influence. High class execution of first class compositions with advanced arrangements and superb production value: terrific everywhere! Dark and awesome! Heavy yet subtle! Avid consumers of the Shellac | NoMeansNo | Rhythm Pigs | Oxbow | Iceburn style will find some great vitamins here. The two albums (Diablo and Sing) are totally killer extrapolations of that genetically modified soundscape with much intense distortwists and enough density in the darkness to keep the abrasion vivid. The first EP Rode is a little less awesome with its uses of a drum machine within a more primitive formula. The live CD is an instrumental experience with a more jazzy touch, great stuff too. There are only awesome things here: up to North From Here, get the cream of 90s death metal. The quality of the demos surpasses that of many albums, and the two albums are perfect jewels of Entombed-meets-Death-but-better thrashing death metal. There are seriously very few album better than these from Planet Classic Death! Amok and Down then confiscate the throne of best heavy metal, especially Amok, where Type O Negative meets early Iron Maiden - none more classic! Absolute perfection of the most insidious choruses! The following albums go further in the alternative, almost gothic rock direction, with much sweet despair and fat assertion. These are not metal anymore, but it does not matter. It is still poisonous. The Cold White Light is the marvel of the lot. Few bands have maintained such a level of satisfaction through so drastic changes of style, but Sentenced yes they can! Crush salt and sneeze it! Finnish death til triplazer!
