I still can't decide what is my favorite 1986 thrash metal album: Reign In Blood or Darkness Descends. Allow me another 30 years of manic headbanging to ponder. We Have Arrived had already been a deadly bomb that had rendered 1984 an even most crucial year after Haunting The Chapel, Apocalyptic Raids, In The Sign Of Evil, Sentence Of Death, Ride The Lightning, amen. But it was only a warm-up preamble to its incredible successor. More complexity made the last two albums less blatantly voracious, yet these are still dark giants in their own realms. Darkness Descends remains of course the epitome of darkangelry and probably of the whole thrash metal zeriverse, Absolute triplathrash attack! WE WILL GIVE YOU MERCILESS ZER!!! Marvel of the eternal! Up the upper layer of the zerosphere that wraps the EZTT, one meets unmovable entities, among them Scat Opera. The late 80s/early 90s were loaded with what was tagged as funk metal, it was all hot and new and rich with these riffs. Scat Opera is the brightest light in this galaxy. The comparative advantage of Scat Opera lies in the very intense Victims Family sound they use to reinforce a Faith No More | Living Colour backbone of killer rocking groove. But there is a lot more than that and I would trade an organ for a third album. Please! Schnell! Meanwhile we must play another million times these essential recordings of zerrest zeritude. It was less apparent due to the confinement of the internet in 1985 to the pages of MRR, but the PC police was already extremely virulent, and S.O.D. was a hot target. Nevermind the aristo-punks, Speak English Or Die is as full of pubescent bad taste, monster riffs and killer songs as day one. The thing ages very well and grandma is moshing in all directions! The CD version contains an excellent cover of Inferno's Ram It Up. Then the other releases are OK, but of course that first album remains why they are such a dirty rotten classic super group (featuring shareholders of Anthrax and Nuclear Assault / Brutal Truth). The closing event was a party featuring a show with Icona Pop and Gwen Stefani. I was floored. Unexpected extension of the antizer! I had suspected it existed but had never experienced such infect blasphemy for the ear, the mind and the flesh. This show was my most horrible descent into the apparently bottomless vertical tunnels of mediocrity. I could not even bring myself to get drunk, and there was a huge open bar! The two Swedes cannot sing, cannot dance, cannot write sentences, they'd better enroll in amateur porn. Then Guano Stefani manufactured an impersonation of Madonna with even less talent, which is an achievement I must admit. No singing, no lyrics, no musical background, the invincible force of vapidness was overwhelming. I am still speechless. Quack quack quack march the gooses. Back to the hotel, blasted the ZOM terror horror antidote! Thanks to ZOM, the disinfection was quick. Nothing like a good drowning in the death swamp of Korpse, Hellhammer, Coffins and Grave!
