Scraps - Apartheid,
1986 Vinyl 7" 33 ⅓ RPM Aaltrack Records - none 02. Nations On Fire, Scraps - Strike The Match / Wrapped Up In This Society, 1992 CD Compilation Strive Records - STR-02 , Compilation Contains 29 songs by: Nations On Fire, Scraps Back to basics - back to the caves! Nations On Fire were an OK Belgian hardcore punk outfit, and Scraps were a French thrashcore band who sounded like an accelerated version of the UK anarchopunk thing, but way more mediocre: fast but sloppy, noisy but not as extreme as Lärm, angry but juvenile - this weak guitar sound, those atrocious vocals! NoF delivered the generic HC thing, the formula was well understood, but they appeared in the early 90s and by then they already sounded retro, without added personality or intensity or virtuosity to make their music noticeable, aka a waste of my time. Lyrics wise, both bands inflict on their audience the ridiculous, prepubescent, irritatingly conformist mantras you'd expect from militant automatons. The depth of a beer can, the thinking power of a brick. I have tried to sell these discs for decades but nobody wants them. After over three decades of Candlemass, the doom metal crown is still firmly in their possession. The Dio/Sabbath formula spawned this entire branch of heavy metal and it is all great. If you do not know what Candlemass, doom metal or Dio/Sabbath stand for, in a nutshell it is not anything in the range of funeral, sludge, stoner nor death doom. Doom metal is majesty in mid-to-slow tempo under the hood of crunchy, sinister and melodic heavy metal. It is perfect metal. I find no bad album in this collection, actually I do not even find an average or sub-optimal entry here. This is doom metal nirvana! Candlemass have not usurped their royal status. I find no disappointment ever in their black light discography, but I still have my favorites and this might be the late 90s albums (the two awesome Abstrakt Algebra, Dactylis and 13th Sun), or it might be the Robert Lowe albums (mid-to-late 00's) - so heavy, or the Epicus live recording of 2011, or the original Epicus, who fucking knows, aaah, tough choice. But those late 90s releases have a subtle flavor of 70s that makes them special. Anyway, Canlemass rule forever and the new giant release The door to doom is not going to alter this domination. Anyway this recording is a shitty bootleg, not listenable, I was not to waste any more time on it. - I split and trimmed the songs in the hidden track of the DETESTation CD reissue. Miasma

Miasma - Changes,
1992 CD Album Lethal Records - NN1 Let us revisit another hidden treasure from the bowels of the second wave of death metal (or of the tail of the first wave, who cares). At the time this album did not seem worth entering a top 10 or anything, but in retrospective, it is quite an impressive effort, something like a semi-classic, at least immensely underrated. This death metal is clearly different from the major trends of the era. It does not sound like Morbid Angel, it is no imitator of the Swedish thing, it is different from the UK branch of the industry, and I could go on for an hour. At the same time, nobody will fall of their chair with a gasp of surprise when hearing it for the first time. It is "just" a very personal and talented effort in musical darkness with as much majesty as powerful delivery of speed bursts. A loose comparison can be made with early Vital Remains and Atrocity with more finesse through which one may discern the doom of the first Paradise Lost album. Musically more advanced than the average early 90s death metal record, this is a true headbangzer! Remove brackets and unzip: [germ attack] !ZER Miasma ZER! |

Noneuclid - The Crawling Chaos,
2006 CD Album Merciless Records - MR CD 019 02. Noneuclid - Metatheosis, 2014 File MP3 Album x 10 Blood Music - none The band name caught my eye, then their music subjugated my ears and all the connected meat. Noneuclid offer a world-class marvel of a technical-yet-super-catchy thrash metal. They play very fast and very well, as if Mekong Delta, Forced Entry and Atheist had merged with a bonus acceleration power. There are also also numerous (especially on the second masterpiece) segments that would not be out of scope on a Triptykon release. There is potent crunchy groove and massive heaviness between the speed bursts and the acrobatic riffs. There is mood and there is aggro, there is exhilaration and there is menace, there is sweetness and there are angles. Heads bang, necks break! And it sticks to the neuron! There is all the metal fan might need in two spectacular releases! Noneuclid til megazer! Remove brackets and unzip: [pythagoras] !ZER Noneuclid ZER! |
