We knew something was up in the Mordred camp since the release of the excellent EP Volition and here we are now with one hell of a new album almost 30 years after their previous and formidable creature The Next Room. Let's fight inequality and include in the conversation the poor souls who never heard of Mordred: here is a one of a kind band expert at merging the heaviness of metal and the groove of funk with a captivating melodic approach and a gift for the über catchy without the degrading gimmicks of radio prostitutes. There was a major thrash metal element on Fool's Game as in early Megadeth, Blind Illusion or Re-Animator, or a much heavier brother of The Confident Rat from Ignorance. A true gem of flexible thrash! The following awesome releases showcase an approach much closer to 24/7 Spyz, Living Colour or an adult version of Faith No More. Mordred should have been huge, with such talent, skills and songs. Amazing musicians fronted by an excellent singer! Maybe it's not too late, the brand new album is full of hits, the new songs expand their trademark sound with hints at what Bad Brains were doing on their last album, or at the giants of modern rock KXM. And much more of course, because the sonic content of The Dark Parade is totally faithful to its title and artwork: a string of killer songs through many stylistic variations without losing the common thread of the somber Mordred sound. Up to and including the 2009 release Black Devotion, Inferno constantly upgraded its weapons of black mass destruction that were then fueled by the classic spirits of the Scandinavian 90s. Brutal yet with a sense of melody as in Immortal's Pure Holocaust with several riffs not out of place of a punk album, this leg of the Inferno catalog increasingly improves the recipe, but was not yet reaching sufficient heights to scream "classic". Then everything changed with the Omniabsence 2013 masterpiece which strongly reeks of superiority. From then on, Bathory Blood Fire Death and Mayhem De Mysteriis are more strongly felt in the mix while at the same time a new and unique grand vibe of cosmic riffs that could also be used by Inquisition and Veilburner sculpts the sound of Inferno. No wild experimentation or divergence, still the fast blackisation of the wicked, but they found their own way and carved out their own high density universe. An impressive great leap forward. All releases since 2013 are made out of this pure black gold of the highest quality - and speed - and death. The newer stuff is very very fast, very very well written, very very dark with the cavernous death metal haunting, very very well produced and just awesome from start to finish. Novelty post: Jurassic Jade, Gastunk

Two legendary 80s bands back with their new offerings: ZER! Or almost. I must admit the Gastunk leaves me... disappointed. As a total fan of everything they released previously, this new album is a bit weak. They still deliver the hard rocking groove they evolved after their classic initial punk & thrash sedimentation, but this is much less juicy, less captivating than Mother or the immense live albums from the 90s. Maybe the album is too long with too many fillers. A couple of great songs with the Gastunk trademark, but the rest is mostly average... Not bad, but I expected to be thrown out of my chair. Which happened with the monumental Jurassic Jade. This one is a complete winner, a treasure of absolutely perfect JJ crossover thrash. I am tempted to award it  the "best Jurassic Jade album" gold medal, but that must be the excitement of novelty. Advanced writing, perfect delivery, maximum energy, superb production, great artwork, no idea about the lyrics. Awesome thrash metal and much more! Makes me as wet as the latest Shellshock.
