Quite superior to the new DRI EP if you ask me, proof being Fit To Be Tied, the most murderous snake of the trio. Aversion's name could probably have become much bigger had they surfaced five years earlier, but by 1990 fusion/funk metal, death metal and grunge were all the rage. Let us get flattened by the mountain of Cathedral. Everyone knows the story, Napalm Death singer leaves grindcore galaxy and enters doom dominion, and then we die. At the crossroads of classic doom (the Forest monument) and bulldozing sludge (the incredible Endtyme that almost goes as far as the ecstatic black hole of Teeth of Lions), Cathedral know how to bend your skull. They also know how to melt thy neuron and steal your heart with the formidable progressions and inventions on the albums after the heavy VIIth Coming. Prog-doom and 70s condensation? The farewell Last Spire is one awesome combination of everything they did with a lot of gravity and added blackness. Another classic! I was not too fond of the stoner direction of the late 90s, anyone is welcome to forward links to FLACs of the two missing albums. So, they're dead & buried, but already sort of reincarnated into With The Dead and its fabulous planet-shattering offering of more crushing doom. All excellent: Jingo rock like hell, an amazing live recording from the hard rocking Germans on fire. Hirax reiterate the aggressive and compact style they've been known for the past albums, nothing new but high density super efficient old school thrash metal. That Warfare demo CD is for very old fans who miss the very old days of Pure Filth, lots of bulldozing archeo-fun with a lo-fi attack. Attitude Adjustment return with a new blitz of angry crossover that matches No Way Back in quality, however there are two flaws: it is way too short (I expected more volume after a 5 years long wait), and the best songs are the three covers from American Paranoia and Out Of Hand. Totenmond are back to crush things and bodies with a new delivery of their very heavy crust sludge of Eisenvater proportions, awesome bone-cracking! But wait... there's D.R.I. and their three new songs (not bad for a 21 years long wait!!!), plus two covers from Dealing With It! in slow motion. I expected to be more excited by this new D.R.I. release, but am I not blaspheming?? And last but not least, the superstar release of this post, the new missile from Gargoyle! Pure and perfect gargoylism is deployed on this magnificent album, with the traditional two almost-cheesy ballads, and of course the high level, super sophisticated, killer thrashing of the rest of this gem of an album that navigates in Super Battle Gargoyle territory. In the dominant triumvirate of Classic Teutonic Thrash (natürlich with Destruction & Kreator), Sodom have always been my favorite, by far. The young ape that was me in 1984 had not experienced anything that evil! D.R.I. & Lärm were maybe faster, but Sodom were the zenith of all that is black and pulverizing - more than Venom, Hellhammer, Slayer and Bathory! Satan had finally founded a band himself! Outbreak of evil! I can't find a bad or boring album in the Sodom armory. Unstoppable worship of the whole thing! Except that strange Final Sign Of Evil re-recording that was worse than the original (could have written the 10% review - but I'll still accept a FLAC link! And I'll also accept a FLAC version of the alternate version of Obsessed By Cruelty). Favorites? Hard to say, but the megazer ultraclassic 80s releases aside, I am a total addict of Get What You Deserve and Code Red. So many bulldozing hammers & giant chainsaws! The live releases are all totally amazing too. Over time, Sodom came closer to the Slayer sound, but the albums from the past decade are way better than Repentless. The monster Decision Day buries it hands down. S.O.D.O.M.! Today, I'm only listening to Sodom and I dedicate the entire sodomania to the rodents who are rioting in the US because they do not like their new slave-master. Way to go, rodents!
