After having been floored by the brand new Temple Of Void CD, I really needed more first grade doom death, so now Hooded Menace and Kuolemanlaakso are helping a lot. Kuolemanlaakso have the ability to floor the most jaded doomonaut. Revitalizing of the classic early Paradise Lost | Anathema earthquake of doom and death ? Zer. Revisiting the melodic powers of My Dying Bride with more menace and less sadness ? Zer. General addiction and killer riffs in the catchy dispositions of the heavy ? Zer. This is a triplazering collection of eternal vicious love and crushing death. The awesome artwork perfectly decorates and matches the awesome musical content - no false promises. Porn for doom death maniac. Same thing for that curious latest release : it looks like it, it even has it in the title - it is a quiet goth metal album that Sentenced fans certainly appreciate - no false promises. Kuolemanlaakso enlarges the Zeriverse of doom in great proportions!

As more and more places are stuck in a lock-down by the terrorists known as "the state", we need a relevant soundtrack. Enter Sickening Horror, a superb purveyor of the finest death metal from Greece. The three albums deliver in your face yet virtuoso death metal where technicality enhances the songs instead of plaguing them with undecipherable complexity. There is a flow here, the music is not mindlessly trying to bury the listener under an avalanche of administrative tech-death riffs but to engage him with actual art, from experienced musicians. "Somewhere between Morbid Angel and Atheist with a touch of jazz" could be a decent one-sentence description. In any case, it is definitely what the doctor orders to relieve you from the stupid shit you're watching on TV. The three albums are gems in themselves, from rawest to most advanced, and remain in the top wagon of the death metal EZTT. Death attacks sickness!

Sickening Gore

Sickening Gore - Destructive Reality - 1993 01. Sickening Gore - Destructive Reality, 1993 CD Album
Massacre Records - MASS CD 025
Another minor masterpiece that went mostly unnoticed (I bought this CD only 10 years ago) despite its strength and power. Yes, it is generic death metal, and yes it is extremely well executed, well produced and well composed. Despite the logo and band name, no gore grind nor Cannibal Corpse impersonation here. Rather, fans of the death-with-thrash metal riffs style as in early Malevolent Creation or Morbid Angel-with-Slayer ergonomics shall be delighted by that beast. With a slightly more personal touch, minor musical experiments or any kind of excess in speed or heaviness - or on the contrary a bit of melody and progressions - this great and super competent album might have become a true classic - but never mind, sometimes we just need the neck breaking and the demolition. Headbang your way through the quarantine!

Things I am not a fan of: Krishna and Youth Of Today. However when ex YoT people started to sing in praise of Krishna, I could not help liking it. I still cannot care less about Krishna, I spent 2 hours talking with a colonel or a general of the Montreal Krishna temple a few years ago, it was cordial and funny, and they have nothing more to say than the Muslims, the Christians or any other sect. But this band proves they have much better music (unless you think Trouble play Christian doom metal). So Shelter, if you never heard them, offer a combination of rock, pop and punk rock, a couple of times as raw and fast as your classic NYHC outburst. But mainly it is quiet pop punk rock and it is very pleasing between two war metal albums. Nice choruses, some out of tune vocals with a lot of charm, plain & catchy music all the time, what else do you need to rest the meat? My subjective ranking does not elevate Shelter to the zerness of Quicksand or NoFx, but you may have a better idea of their sound if I mention these dudes. Will praying with Shelter fight off the nasty virus? Stay tuned.

Requested: rezerred. Planned for posting anyway, because the newest album by these expert thrashsmiths warrants a complete tribute. Unpredictable is less "experimental" than the incredible Shi, it is a return to their ancestral thrashification while retaining some of the Shi vibe. It is some sort of metal perfection when you crave the Japanese trademark. Even the non-addict should really bend an aural conduit in ShellShock's general direction. It sounds like a waste of meat time not too listen to Fiel Lärm, Shi or Unpredictable on a weekly basis, even if only remotely interested in thrash metal - there is much more here, they smirk from the cracks of the failed marriage of Voïvod and Nuclear Assault in the twelfth dimension. This is the trinity of triplazering foreverizer in the zeriverse!

Friday the 13th is the perfect day for this post that delivers the soundtrack to the paranoid crisis that is cancelling the year 2020. While all the governments are playing their fascistic games with total impunity - even massive approval, let us navigate the pristine waters of "experimental" rock, as in dissonant grooves with atonal riffing and cold vocals. In my limited experience with this kind of glacial non-metal, I hear echoes of late Carbonized and mid-era Fleurety, and, why not, a drop of the lighter moments of early 90s Voivod. So if you dig tags like "avant-garde" with a jazzy touch, try this Virus. Their spotless discography is highly recommended for a change of aural habits (speaking for myself here!) while not losing the sonic unfriendliness that we crave. While not heavy or anything aggressive, the music propagated by Virus is highly contagious and not nice, ergo excellent. Hard to pick a favorite, all entries here match each other in terms of quality and style, there is not much variation and no bad moment either. If you plan to sit inside your refrigerator for the next weeks with all your toilet paper, blast some Virus too!
