Unseen Terror - The Peel Sessions, 1989 CD EP      Dutch East India Trading - DEI8337-2      Reissue from 1992 Heartbreak motel 1987: the ape has been subjugated by the likes of Heresy, Napalm Death, Electro Hippies, Atavistic, Cryptic Slaughter et al. for a year or two. That accelerated intensification in the sonic attack was another step after the eruption of Bathory | Septic Death | Siege, which itself was a terrorification of the Venom | Discharge era, and all was perfect bliss to the point of blindly buying any release from that scene, especially from that new indie label Earache Records. Error and submission! The LP of Unseen Terror ("with the dudes from Napalm Death and Heresy!!!" == MUST BUY ASAP!!!) shows up in the record store, heartbeat acceleration, pumping up of hot sweat, skip test listening, jump to cashier, run home, feverishly put record on turntable, sit down with a big smile of expectation - and cry larger and larger chunks of vomit as the songs run their sad course. Abandoned erection! Total flaccidity of the meat! That record sucks donkeys! Fuck I hated it. I sold it a week later to a weak friend with no taste in music. 30 years later, that album still fucking sucks, I can't understand how it became such a "classic". The worst Heresy demo is 666 times better than that lifeless, impotent crap. Sure, there are blast beats and basic riffs and all, but in the end, you get a bland, insipid album that you never return to. Why listen to that bore when you can self-abuse your auditory canals with Repulsion? No, I did not buy the remaster CD, I fucking downloaded it for the sake of this blog - and it features at least a few bonus tracks that are ok, i.e. way better than the main course. But yes, that Peel Session release is good, even great at times (Voice Your Opinion is a ripper). Anyway, the 80s could not always win, and I`ll stick to Heresy and ND. Some would claim NWOBHM, and they would not be very wrong, for some of this music has a heavy metal edge - check if the song Thunderburst on Head On rings a bell! Iron Maiden fans already know that Bruce Dickinson, Maiden's pilot, is the singer on Head On and Shock Tactics (and on the Live At Reading '81 of course). The music itself has more connections to the sound && style of Angel Witch or Riot. Most of Samson is very fine, yet there are also awful things here in the form of ballads and AOR purulence (arrrrghhhhhh - what's worse than oï, folk metal and hip hop combined? AOR!!)), actually the eponymous album from 1993 is the main culprit - it is entirely non-listenable garbage, I'd even take a Europe album, or Cold Lake, or Stay Hard, or Love Is For suckers, before that piece of donkey crap. Chasing radio hits is like requesting to get AIDS. Don't do that, stay ugly! The other albums consistently rock, sometimes at (Belgian) Killer levels,  and even if I cannot rank them as high as the output from Saxon, Judas Priest or Diamond Head, they deserve full recognition and praise for the catchy and energetic content they offer, except that damn 1993 album. This is an album designed for fans of Cathedral (or Witchsorrow nowadays).  This is an amazing album with killer riffs, epic songs and super strong production. The slow crush does not dim the catchy factor - this is not drone doom nor funeral doom, this is classic doom in a sludge tank.The heaviness within the variations, the elaborate structures around the two-ton riffs make it flow as smoothly and as irrevocably as a bulldozer on a graveyard slope on a rainy day. It is a fucking great album! It is even a classic, few recent doom records rank as high as this one in the EZTT doom hall of fame. Plaguerizer triplazer forever doomonaut! I have not heard anything they released after they changed name to Serpentcult (because the singer was arrested for child molestation, that pig). FLAC links much welcome. But when it does, there is rejoicing at every level. For what we have here is tagged as "contemporary jazz", which is a very scary label. But fear not, there is enough weirdness and darkness to make up for the lack of chainsaws. Plus it is quite heavy, the drummer being far from shy. Crazy sax, crazy violins, crazy keys, crazy everything over frantic rhythmic pulses and yes, doom. One fan of that classic first Mr. Bungle album and of the darker Zorn things might fall in love, and the disciple of King Crimson on speed might also raise an eyebrow. This is not lounge music. On the one hand you have the superior Polish black metal scene and its constant production of advanced & tortuous masterpieces of mindfuck. On the other hand you have the bare-teeth attacks of the Spanish and the French scenes and their explosions of fucking raw blitzkrieg black metal carnage. Today, we deal with Antaeus, a French commando that will not be accused of redefining the genre nor of trying to be original. Their only goal is to splatter as much blood and guts all over the place in the name of Satan, and they know how to do it. The four albums progress in one direction: faster, meaner, more hateful, more disgusted. And the first one already sounds like early Darkthrone on 78 RPM. This is not nice, there are no keyboards, no female moaning, no acoustic interludes, no groovy parts, no headbanging sections, no silly melodies, there is only Satan and destruction and speed - but not to the unlistenable levels of bathroom recordings that plague the industry. Antaeus make it raw because it must be, yet the production is powerful & evil and the execution is sharp & merciless. Not a sloppy second. Actually, this is all perfect when you are looking forward to a solid session of cranium flattening but already had your dose of war metal for the day. Switch to Antaeus and get your liver reshaped on top of your fractured skull. Total fucking death with the black metal madness chainsaws and nuclear overkill forever triplazer!
