Complete zerness of the super cheese! Yes, but no. This is neither a sarcastic post, nor a mere dive into nostalgia lake. All my hard-rock life, I have been a permanent and avid listener of the David Lee Gorgoroth era of Van Halen, except 1984 (what??? Keyboards in VH?? ACH!). This stuff rocks like nothing else. Edward has been the emperor of killer riffs and axemanship wizardry for almost 4 decades, and Torso Dave is one of my favorite singers (a post of his solo albums is coming up too! Yes!). All the Van Halen songs with this line-up are simply amazing. I must admit that I had put my Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple aside (not for too long...) when I discovered Van Halen I (in 1979!!!). Slack jaw! Perfection in hard rock! Amazement and hours of air guitar! All these early VH records melt my neuron. I carved the VH logo on my high-school tables many times. The 2012 album is another killer piece of hard rock too, hit after hit and heavy rocking stuff all disc long. I wasn't expecting much when I found this $1 copy, but it rocks 27 times like Metallica. Actually, I am now wondering if I should re-explore the Sammy Hagar discs which I didn't like then, haven't tried them in 20 years. Meanwhile, let's rock til infinity with Van Halen and the comets!

  1. When something rocks, no need to make excuses or apologies for it, and Van Halen circa '77-'82 rocks. Pure and simple. I'm on board Zer. Great post. Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Sabbath etc. Bring em on.... Cheers

    1. Right! But you know how it is... My death metal and hardcore friends love to laugh at my appetite for Twisted Sister and Scorpions.
Be warned all you arena rock haters! There will be posts here for Mötley Crüe, Deep Purple, Rammstein, Rainbow, Whitesnake, Yes, Rush and all the old hippie, spandex, hairstylist guard!
BTW you can get almost all Thin Lizzy here. I am not into maintaining 2 blogs, so I'll probably repost all this on the Church Of Zer, but maybe not very soon.

    3. Putain je me fais effectivement vieux, j'ai rien compris !

  2. Twisted Sister "Under the Blade"... Motley Crue "Too Fast for Love"..Absolute gems... Scorpions/ UFO absolutely owned the late '70's and early '80's. Been there, done that Zer. Many a drunken night getting grief from my harder than hardcore friends. Funny thing is, most of them now listen to crap way worse than what they were complaining about 30 years ago. Some of us are in it for life, and at 48 years old that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Love your site and all the work you put into it.. btw, did you catch the Van Halen CD that came out a few years ago that was the '77 demo's and stuff that was produced by Gene Simmons?

  3. Alice Cooper was my first hero, still is. He taught me that I should always question authority, and it was that foothold that literally saved my life, through 17 years of a stolen childhood. A majority of one is still a majority.

I still love Yoko Ono but I wouldn't care to shake her hand for the fascist statist attacks she and that useful idiot son executes against freedom. To hear Yoko sing "I'm A Witch, I'm a bitch, I don't care what you say", gets through to me. I've never met anyone else who enjoyed her craft but it's great for me. A majority of one is still a majority.

I think I have all the Van Halen in my library except for the Hagar material but I haven't enjoyed any of Hagar's stuff except where he was with Montrose. I love Hagar's vocals for Montrose, especially on the song "Connection". I don't know why I dead end on Hagar solo or Hagar/Halen, but I know it's got nothing to do with David Lee Roth. I encounter the same disparity when Sinatra leaves me stone cold bored, but Dean Martin shaves ice. Individualism will never be captured, imprisoned by story.

  4. Spot on with this VH post. The demo is called Zero by the way. Also look for The Complete Warner Bros Demos. It's like two discs worth of great stuff. (alt versions and some unreleased stuff).

  7. I love the Van Halen first album, pure Hard Rock "nearest metal" IMO (sorry for my english, isn't my native language)

  8. teh pure awesome! thx for this, so much fun, such witty and playful rocking on the first two albums! "women and children" and "fair warning" are darker, more introspective but no less great.

but most of all I would never have bothered with "a different train" if you'd not had put it up. what a discovery! fucking awesome album man!! thxxx!!

still would love if you post the 1984 album too. and maybe the two david lee roth solo albums with vai...!

    1. Ah, tout est en FLAC ici. Pourquoi détester ce format admirable ?
Si tu lis bien le Uzer's Guide, tu comprendras qu'il n'y a pas de rechargement pour tout ce qui est daté après janvier 2012.
