In the glorious 1984 days of tape trading, a 23rd generation copy of a noisy live audience recording (think: mostly saturation, made with a  boombox) caught my ear with a couple of rabid covers of Slayer. I could not believe someone was brave and strong enough to cover Slayer. That band name was Death, then they disappeared from my radar until I came across the Scream Bloody Gore LP. Ridiculous artwork, album title in double quotes, and on the back a photo shows a guy with a Kreator shirt = instantly buy this LP. Anyone involved in Slayer covers while wearing a shirt of the Kreator of Pleasure To Kill deserved my summer money. And this LP is still my favorite of their discography as an incredible Possessed impersonation with tighter execution. Seven Churches with a stable tempo! An instant classic! Then you know the rest and how Death made their way to the top of the metal underground with a series of spotless albums that document a remarkable evolution from cavemen thrash bash to advanced metallic wizardry - not smoother, only more complex and vicious riffing and signatures with black metal overtones in the vocals. Death forever metalizer triplazer!

  1. I tend to prefer a bands earliest and roughest recordings. But imo Death actually get better after the first two album, Spiritual Healing is pretty badass.
