Heavy Metal is the law! While we're waiting for a new album, let's revisit the awesome catalog of Portrait, one of the finest instances of the 21st century generation in heavy and speed metal. That first album is a little too begging and may be short-circuited for the benefit of its three awesome successors. Although they share the energy and the speed, this is not only a typical retro thing à la Night Demon or Metallian. Portrait go much farther in the direction of early Mercyful Fate | Satan | Agent Steel through high velocity riffing with plenty of hooks, technicalities and epic developments all guns blazing. The headbangmeter is at 11 and the jury is unanimous: this is already classic stuff! Triplazering monster classic reincarnation of the NWOBHM on super turbo!

  1. Oh wow! Some years ago I wrote these cats off as another well done but slightly unimaginative 80s Retroband.
This is actually really good. You had me at Agent Steel (The first 2 LPs are GODLY)/Satan (EVERYTHING!).
Merciful Fate on the other hand... GREAT Music, but Kims' vocals, as soon as the Falsetto comes in, I'm out.
Yeah, I know, BLASPHEMY among the True Old School Metalheads, my ears just can't stand those frequencies. Sorry.
Anyways, thanks for another cool recommendation!

    1. I know, it took me at least two years to not be annoyed by the King's vocals! Then I got it :-)
That's what I don't like about the 1st Portrait, too much King Diamond and not the most stable version of it.

  2. P.S.:
Not really relevant, but for some reason I kept confusing Protrait with 2 other cool retro bands from sweden:
Vampire and/or In Solitude. Dunno why, but they are/were cool as well.
