Sarcasm - Stellar Stream Obscured, 2022 CD Album Hammerheart Records - HHR 2022-08 A questionable logo, some scary artwork and that melodic style of Swedish death metal that is not very popular at the Church should have redirected Sarcasm to /dev/null. But despite the sonic connections to At The Gates, Merciless, Unanimated, or Dissection (none of which will appear on this website), Sarcasm fill the Church with bliss. The echoes of Dawn, early Sentenced and The Crown may have tilted the balance towards total zer, because this output is not just ok, it is an absolute delectation of the wicked. Fast, tight and violent delivery augmented by stellar execution and above all murderously catchy riffs (Upon The Mountains Of Glory!) provide this amazing combination of refinement and brutality. The guitar duels shine from within the deepest ravages of blasts and screams, while the percussive rhythmic precision builds up a wall of dynamic relentlessness. It is a great skill to combine so naturally the ferocity of black death and the classic superiority of Judas Priest. Leather, knives and brains! Triplazering killing machine of the total burning metal! Remove brackets and unzip: [swedeathonizer] !ZER Sarcasm ZER! |

what do you think of the first two At the Gates albums and their other bands Liers in Wait and Grotesque? Sarcasm Rules
ReplyDeleteI follow the Church in it's general assessment of Swedish 'melo-death' and the referenced bands will rarely ever find a spot my personal playlists. However, let me also venture into suggesting some names that might appeal: Soulreaper (a bit more classic thrash/black/death with some Dissection guys) and Gates Of Ishtar (not dissimilar to the other 'Gates' but a little leaner on the syrupy melody, I quite like their first album for some reason or other)
DeleteATG: got the first 2 albums when they came out, liked them for a couple of years, got bored, traded the CDs for grindcore EPs.

Ah yes Gates of Ishtar, I remember listening to the first album a lot 25 years ago. Should revisit. Never heard Soulreaper, will try.
