Back to basics - back to the caves! Nations On Fire were an OK Belgian hardcore punk outfit, and Scraps were a French thrashcore band who sounded like an accelerated version of the UK anarchopunk thing, but way more mediocre: fast but sloppy, noisy but not as extreme as Lärm, angry but juvenile - this weak guitar sound, those atrocious vocals! NoF delivered the generic HC thing, the formula was well understood, but they appeared in the early 90s and by then they already sounded retro, without added personality or intensity or virtuosity to make their music noticeable, aka a waste of my time.  Lyrics wise, both bands inflict on their audience the ridiculous, prepubescent, irritatingly conformist mantras you'd expect from militant automatons. The depth of a beer can, the thinking power of a brick. I have tried to sell these discs for decades but nobody wants them.

  1. You are a bit hard here !!! the scraps ep was their first record so, yeah, it is sloppy rudimentary stuff but it has its charm and I preferred that to the horrible "punk français" of that time..they got better, tighter in their later stuff...I saw both bands live a few times, especially nations on fire at the vort n vis in ieper and both bands were great !!! straight edge bands were never my cup of tea but to be fair to nations on fire, they actually tried to be more than just a generic straight edge band and tried to inject political topics in their lyrics..whther they succeeded, I am not able to judge..strike the match is decent, their later stuff is mediocre to say the least...I rarely listen to those records because I simply can not stand the high pitched vocals and the atrocious English accent..what was funny to me at that time was that the singer went from drunken punk stuff (les alcolos song on the ep) to playing with established members (the guitar player and the bass player) of the Belgian straight edge scene... ah..those good days at the vort n vis...Philippe..

    1. I plead guilty of a small excess of undeserved harshness. Maybe because my first band in 1986 sounded as bad as Scraps, or worse... at least we did not take it as seriously. The older I get, the less patience I have for that kind of childish stuff, time is precious. Compare the value of 30 minutes of Scraps vs Cryptic Slaughter or Heresy...
